This 3-day course is tailored for certified open water divers and above, offering a chance to better understand our vital underwater ecosystems and how to protect them. We've designed this course to give divers an overview of coral reefs, their importance, and how we can preserve them, in just 3 days!
During the course, you will be presented with information in the morning sessions, followed by 2 dives on Koh Tao's reefs, putting your new knowledge to good use! We will discuss exciting topics such as coral reef ecology, human and natural threats, and solutions. We will explore different reefs around the island around Koh Tao, perfecting dive skills, seeing what marine biology looks like in a real setting by collecting data that will contribute to our monitoring plan.
This Conservation Course is designed for Open Water divers and above. Whether you have just received your certification or are an experienced diver, this course is perfect if you:
Want a better understanding of coral reef ecology
Are interested in conducting marine biology surveys
Want to help in our monitoring program
Have several days on Koh Tao and want to learn more about the local species
Are passionate about the ocean and would like to help protect it
Our 3 days will start with a classroom session in the morning led by our marine biologist instructor. Topics that will be covered include coral reef ecology, different species groups and their functions on the reef. We will discuss the important threats to our reefs as well as successful solutions to prevent these problems. You will learn what it means to be a marine biologist and what science looks like on a coral reef.
Our afternoons will be for our dives - we will be doing 2 dives each day to explore the different reefs around the island of Koh Tao. During these dives, you will practice the importance of good diving habits and get a chance to put your new knowledge to use! You will be able to put your fish identification to the test, as well as learning how to take water samples and conduct underwater surveys to collect your own data!
By the end of the course, you will have an in-depth understanding of coral reef ecology, the status of coral reefs on Koh Tao, experience in collecting data underwater, and awareness of what you can do to help our oceans thrive!
