Have you ever wondered what a day in the life of a marine biologist would be like? If you’re passionate about the ocean and curious about how you can get involved in protecting it, our Discover Marine Conservation program is the perfect place to start. This unique 1-day crash course offers you the chance to step into the shoes of a conservation diver, learning about the challenges our reefs face while experiencing hands-on underwater exploration on the island of Koh Tao.

A Taste of Marine Biology in Just One Day

Not everyone has weeks to dedicate to training, which is why we designed this experience for divers who want to learn more but only have a limited time on the island. Over the course of a single day, you’ll gain valuable insight into marine biology, coral reef ecology, and conservation techniques — and then put your knowledge into practice on two exciting scuba dives.

The Discover Marine Conservation program is open to all certified Open Water divers and above. Whether you’ve just completed your entry-level certification or you’re already an experienced diver, this course is ideal if you:

  • Want to learn more about how coral reefs function and why they are so important.

  • Are curious about how scientists collect data underwater.

  • Have limited time on Koh Tao but still want to make your dives meaningful.

  • Care about the ocean and want to understand what you can do to protect it.

The day begins with a classroom session led by our experienced conservation instructors. Here, you’ll explore the fascinating world of coral reefs — learning about their ecology, the threats they face, and the solutions that can help protect them. Topics include coral reef structures, the role of fish and other marine life, and the importance of good diving practices in sensitive environments.

In the afternoon, you’ll head out on two guided dives around Koh Tao’s reefs. These dives aren’t just about enjoying the underwater scenery — they’re your chance to put science into action. You’ll practice fish and coral identification skills, learn how to use simple survey methods, and even collect your own CoralWatch data that contributes to global reef monitoring projects.

By the end of the day, you’ll have had a genuine taste of what it’s like to work as a marine conservationist, while also improving your buoyancy and underwater awareness.

  • Make your dives meaningful – Instead of just sightseeing, you’ll actively contribute to conservation.

  • Learn valuable skills – Identification and data collection are essential tools for conservation divers.

  • Gain a new perspective – Understand the threats facing reefs and how small actions can have a big impact.

  • Take knowledge home – Discover what you can do in your everyday life to protect the ocean, no matter where you live.
